MANCHESTER MUSICIANS TO BE SUBJECT OF DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM
(but the Gallagher brothers are not invited)
Just as the British music industry now looks to London for its hairstyles, so it must look to Manchester for its music. With the In The City festival now an essential diary date for all record company schmoozers and Salford’s Unconvention recently reimagined as far afield as Oxford, it is inevitable that the spiritual home of the Hacienda will soon be recognised not merely for leading in the field of independent music but also in that of indispensable music. It is for this reason that on Saturday 7th November 2009 Manchester’s Dancehouse Theatre is playing host to a night of independent artists hailing from a dizzying array of musical DNA, linked only by the ties of association, collaboration and – of course – Manchester.
The group in question is part of Manchester’s Debt Set, a loose affiliation of writers, film-makers, artists and composers operating within a creative co-operative that strives to continually forge links with similar movements all over the world, ensuring that Manchester’s global image is not limited to football alone.
Between them they have played alongside the likes of Motorhead, Supergrass, Eliza Carthy, Vetiver, Sun Ra and Alabama 3, worked with Dr Dog, Elbow, I Am Kloot and The Holmes Brothers, and received praise from members of The Smiths, The Alarm, The Inspiral Carpets, The Mighty Boosh and even The Hells Angels.
Louis Barabbas (songwriter and co-founder of Debt Records) says: “I’ve played shows all over and seen people – particularly in London – fretting about the demise of the music industry, like it means the demise of music itself…. In Manchester people know all about industry – every kind of industry – and those involved in music (the creative side) aren’t worried at all… well, no more than usual. We should be excited: The times, they are a-changin’.”
Debt At The Dancehouse, which will feature musical performances from Louis Barabbas and The Bedlam Six, David Rybka, Becca Williams and Molly Macleod, plus theatrical turns from Richard Barry, Alabaster Deplume, multi-award winning poet Matt Panesh and world renowned clown troupe Le Navet Bete, is to be shot as a live concert film and edited with interview footage of the major players in the scene. “It’s Manchester’s answer to Scorsese’s The Last Waltz,” says Barabbas, “but a bit more hopeful…”
The movie will be released next year to coincide with the first of the Unconvention conferences and Spain’s unplugged music festival Kuiperfest.
